My name is Joan Lambert, Teignbridge District Councillor and Kingsteignton Town Councillor. I am the Member for Kingsteignton West Ward in South Devon, which comprises the Parishes of Kingsteignton West and Teigngrace.

My committee membership within the District Council includes the Overview & Scrutiny and Development Control Committees and the Health and Safety Forum.

My responsibilities within the Parish Council include Works & Services/Planning and Finance. I have been School Governor of Rydon Primary School, Kingsteignton, since 1990.

The purpose of this site is to try and keep you informed about my role and provide you with information about developments in Teignbridge District Council and our local Ward Kingsteignton West.

Sorry my mistake in text

I apologize for a miss quote in the paragraph about pensions, I should have said that over 11million pensioners are getting a pension £40.90 per week less then the official poverty level of £135.60 per week, having said that why do these people have to go through means testing to get benefits, when there is this money in the pension pot.

A little more about me, my interests and my goals ...

I have been involved in nursing in the UK and around the world from 1953 - 1982.

My responsibilities were to care for patients, staff and teaching staff for operating rooms.

Whilst nursing, I was very proud to have been part of a group of senior nursing

officers entrusted in writing a paper to improve care in the UK and my work with Action Aid for Children in the Third World. I was a member of the Community Health Council but when Labour came to power it was disbanded.

From 1999 to the present date I have been elected Councillor, both at Parish and District Council level, where my main responsibilities have been to make sure residents' voices are heard.

My aim as Councillor is to preserve open spaces and to ensure sporting chances for young people.

My interests include people, crosswords, gardening, travel and patchwork quilting. My needlework has been taken around the world to raise monies for the NSPCC.

What are my goals?

To travel around the world again...and to be at peace with myself!

Frontline poet condemns the politicians 'for hiding away'

A British soldier in Afghanistan has accused politicians of 'hiding away and out of danger' in a poignant poem about the return of fallen troops to the UK.

Staff Sergeant Andy McFarlane, 47, wrote the verse on a flight home from the war zone while reflecting on his comrades who had made the ultimate sacrifice and were being flown back for burial.

The poem, entitled Repatriation, details how an unnamed 'hero' is driven through the town of Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire, where crowds turn out to pay their respects. One verse pointedly refers to the absence of ministers from repatriation ceremonies.

The poem has been circulated among UK troops in Helmand and has been posted on Facebook. Sergeant McFarlane, who is based at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan and serves with the Adjutant General's Corps, is on his second tour of Afghanistan in as many years.

This is the full text of the poem:

The leviathan of the sky does land
In England's green and pleasant land.
Its cargo more precious than gold
The body of a hero, bold.
Once the giant's engines stopped
The cargo ramp is gently dropped
Carried by six on shoulders true
The hero is saluted by the crew.
The coffin draped in Union Jack
Is slowly carried out the back.
Out of the dark and into light
Slowly down the ramp and to the right.
The six approach the hearse all black
And place the hero gently in the back.
The six then turn and march away
Their duty has been done this day.
Politicians usually have much to say
No sign of them near here this day.
They hide away and out of danger,
Much easier if the hero is a stranger.
The hearse with its precious load
Moves slowly out on to the road.
The floral tributes line the route
While comrades snap a smart salute.
At the edge of a Wiltshire town
The cortege slows its pace right down.
The streets are packed, many deep,
Some throw flowers, most just weep.
The crowd have come to say farewell,
The church bell rings a low death knell.
Regimental standards are lowered down
As the hero passed through the town.
The cortege stops and silence reigns
The townsfolk feel the family's pain.
The nations' flag lowered to half mast
Our brave hero is home at last.

Places of Interest within my Ward

Stover Country Park Local Nature Reserve, Teigngrace, owned and managed by Devon County Council, contains over 114 acres of woodland, heathland, grassland, lake and marsh and a substantial variety of wildlife.

The Nature Interpretation Centre, opened in 2000 is situated near the entrance of the park and consists of a visitor centre, classroom, rangers' office and public toilets. Additional recreation resources include an aerial walkway, a bird hide, a car park and numerous picnic areas. There is also a wealth of historical interest.
