D-DAY 65th Anniversary
I can remember this date as a 9year old; my storey is one that stays with me.
We that is my cousins and a friend took ourselves off for a swim, that was in the Town of Hitchen, so we had a train journey to under-take, that did not deter us, it was hot and the summer holidays long, no stopping us we left Stevenage with all our swim suits and towels, no bottled water in those days, but we had home made lemonade.
Good afternoon was had by us all, so off we go to get the train back, we new which platform to go to, and there was our train, we get on and found it full of men in uniform, the train moved off, then we were asked questions like where are you going, oh said my bossy cousin home of course, where do you live Stevenage, that was when the fun started, this was a through train to London,
The Inspector in charge of the train had phoned ahead so we could stop at our station.
Then the awful thought my mum would be waiting plus our friend dad was the village policeman, needless to say which one did we dread most of all, that came down to my mother, we had the sharp edge of her tongue but keep out of range of her hands.
It was not until later that we were told these men who had been so kind to us were on their way to fight for King and country in the D-Day invasion of France.
With horror I have today read in the news paper that this government has refused funding for the few men and women to help with the finance to go and pay their respects for all those men killed on this day.
The US and Canada will be there in force, The French will be led by President Sarkozy.
My question is where we stand, will this government be marking this day or is it one of disdain, do they have any comprehension of this day.
What these men and women of this government should relies is these men gave their lives, that is why they have had the life of not knowing what it was like for me as a young child in London with bombs and V-2 rockets plus the doodlebugs.
I owe my life and health to these men, by the advances of medicine following this awful war.
They (I mean the MPs governing this country) have never had to suffer and all the other people who are living and abusing this country. Have they had to ration the food out like my parents, making ends meet, no of course not?
Look at all those men queuing up to get into this money handing out society called Great Briton.
Will this end in war in our own country, due to this pc living, and not caring for the old and frail who have given their all, Just look at the state of some of the hospitals, more concerned with ticking boxes and meeting targets, that sums this country up.
